Stanley C. Grandon M.D.
Director, Eye Surgery Institute
Michigan's Dean of Refractive Surgery

A Detroit native, Dr. Stanley C. Grandon is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in refractive surgery - the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism - by LASIK, radial keratotomy, and astigmatic keratotomy. The most experienced refractive surgeon in Michigan, Dr. Grandon has performed more than 23,000 refractive procedures of all types, approximately 6,000 of which were LASIK, by far the most in Michigan.

He is also one of the most experienced LASIK surgeons in Michigan using the Hansatome Keratome, the newest, most precise, and safest instrument for this procedure.

Dr. Grandon helped Dr. Leo Bores with the first refractive surgery cases in the United States in 1978, He has taught courses on refractive surgery, lectured at international medical meetings, trained other ophthalmologists in his surgical techniques, developed various instruments for refractive surgery, served as refractive surgery consultant to Kresge Eye Institute since 1993, and has had many articles published in leading ophthalmology journals.

Also one of the foremost cataract surgeons in Michigan, Dr. Grandon has been involved in a collaborative study of intraocular lens power calculation that has been published in a prestigious peer review journal. Dr. Grandon, with his brother, Gary M. Grandon, Ph.D., designed computer predictability software to obtain the best possible lens power results.

Dr. Stanley Grandon has designed several of his own highly specialized instruments for use in cataract surgery. Made and marketed nationally by Katena and Mueller, two of the leading surgical instrument manufacturers, they hold many advantages over previously designed instruments. He also designed and patented a type of intraocular lens.Recently, Dr. Grandon designed a lid speculum, manufactured by Katena, which carries certain safety advantages over other lid speculums for LASIK surgery.

In 1985, Dr. Grandon participated in a core study of folding lens implants, and in 1988, he pioneered the no-patch cataract procedure that is highly preferred by patients.

Dr. Grandon is a graduate of Wayne State Medical School. He served his residency in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University. He is board certified by the American College of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has staff appointments at several Detroit-area hospitals, including Straith Hospital for Special Surgery, Oakwood, Sinai-Grace, and Harper-Weber (Kresge Eye Institute).
